Adoption Checklist

Adopting from Companion Cows is an incredibly special experience—for both adopters and the calves or cows you welcome into your home.

Making the decision to surrender an animal is never easy. We understand that there are very limited options for people who need to rehome their cows, which is why our Assisted Rehoming Program exists—to ensure that every animal is safely adopted into a loving forever home, where they can live out their best lives as companion pets.

It is essential for any potential adopter to fully understand the responsibility of owning a cow. We ask that all prospective adopters carefully read the following information to ensure they are entering this commitment with a full understanding of the care, time, and resources required. Rehoming is a significant and often stressful transition for animals, and being prepared helps make the experience positive for both the cow and the adopter.

Biosecurity & Compliance

Biosecurity is designed to protect your property from the entry and spread of pests and diseases. Additionally it is a safeguard for our adopters incase your animals ever get out. The local council will be able to check their ear tags and reunite them with their family!

We require all adopters to have an active Property Identification Code (PIC). In Australia anyone who owns animals considered 'livestock' including but not limited to cows, horses, alpacas, goats & sheep must be have a resitered PIC as well as NLIS ear tags. All animals adopted through Companion Cows will come with NLIS ear tags and be registered to your property. If you do not yet have a PIC please note that this is required before releasing any animals into your care so an application must be made and a copy provided to support your application. If you have any questions we will happily walk you through the process.

If you want to know more about PIC's and NLIS tages please click HERE

Please note in order to be an approve adopter you will be required to have:

Fencing - Over time cows will put a great deal of pressure on your exisitng fencing, we recommend investing in a offset electric fence so that the cows cannot access the fence.

Transport - Depending if you are adoption calves/cows you will need appropriate transport. Companion Cows can assist you in Southern Tasmania with the use of cattle trailer hire.

Adoption Donation

In order to continue our work, we require an adoption donation.

Adoptions will not be finalised until the donations have been received.

Your donations not only save the lives of your new companion cows/calves but also allow us to continue our mission through rescuing and rehoming others and providing vet care, transportation, feed and supplies for our foster carers.

Adoption Donation

Each cow has been given a health and temperament check, wormed and vaccinated, and male cows have been desexed.

We ask adopters to make a donation of their choosing, reflective of the care, time, and resources we invest in rescuing, nurturing, and rehoming each animal. While the amount is entirely at the adopter’s discretion, it provides a meaningful way to acknowledge the work involved in giving these animals a second chance at life and supporting our ongoing mission to rescue and rehome more animals in need.

Please note cows must be adopted in pairs unless prior approval has been given for a single cow adoption*
