Foster Carer Application

Thank you!

Foster carers are the heart & soul of our organisation & allows people like you to change the fate of a calf by giving them a second chance after being rescued from the dairy industry. Their dedication helps rewrite their stories. The once-scared and disoriented calves you welcome into your home gain a renewed sense of security, trust, and hope. Your love shapes their percepti ons & teaches them that people can be kind and nurturing, not a source of fear . In foster care, you will give them the best start to life and a safe space to physically and emotionally heal before they are adopted into their forever homes to live their best lives as companion cows.

Our mission is to be transformative in the lives of dairy cows & their babies through rescue, rehoming & representation. An unwavering voice for the ones we liberate, the ones we lose & the ones we leave behind. Paving a pathway to kindness by keeping the animals at the heart of everything we do and by advocating for a plant-based, dairy-free lifestyle.

We know that they will leave hoof prints on your heart! Image title

Why foster with Companion Cows?

Fostering with Companion Cows is an incredibly special experience both for you and the calves you are caring for.  Many people may know, but for those who don't, the animals we rescue have a devastating reality.

For cows to produce milk, they have to give birth to a calf.  Calves in the dairy industry do not have many options. They are forcibly removed from their mothers only hours after birth as their mothers milk is to valuable to be fed to them. Males are usually slaughtered at 5 days old and females are destined to live the same life of servitude as their mothers. For dairy cows they are subjected to birthing up to 5 calves in their lifetime, all will be taken from them. As dairy cows have been genetically altered to produce more milk than what is needed for their calves, they are susceptible to many serious illnesses and also prone to lamness with hours spend on concrete milking floors. Their lives are valued ONLY by the amount of milk they produce and their ability to continue to get pregnant each year. If supply drops, they reach 6 years old or they fail to get pregnant they are sent to the slaughterhouse. We want to change the fate of the calves/cows that come to us and with your help we can.

Your role as a foster carer transforms despair into hope, fear into trust, and vulnerability into strength. With your guidance, the calves grow not only physically, but emotionally and mentally, too. Fostering Companion Cows is an endeavor of heart and soul, an act of unwavering kindness that reshapes lives and redefines futures.  By fostering you can rewrite their stories and give them the happy ending they would have never been afforded from the industry they were born into. You will be supported your entire fostering journey and can take comfort in knowing all cost are covered by us!

Biosecurity & Compliance

Biosecurity is designed to protect your property from the entry and spread of pests and diseases. Additionally it is a safeguard  incase your fostered animals ever get out. The local council will be able to check their ear tags and reunite them with their foster family!

We require all foster carers to have an active Property Identification Code (PIC). In Australia, anyone who owns animals considered 'livestock', including but not limited to cows, horses, alpacas, goats & sheep, must have a registered PIC and NLIS ear tags. All animals adopted through Companion Cows will come with NLIS ear tags and be registered to your property.  If you do not yet have a PIC, please note that this is required before releasing any animals into your care, so an application must be made and a copy provided to support your application. We will happily walk you through the process if you have any questions.
